    Crossing the Belarusian border

    Due to the visa-free entry and exit regime, more and more tourists are visiting Belarus every year. However, even when arriving in the country under the visa-free regime, knowledge of the rules for crossing the state border will not be superfluous. Experts from the NGO "Club of Business Women" share useful information necessary for all foreigners planning a trip to the Republic of Belarus.

    The Belarusian state border can be crossed at international railway, road, air and water checkpoints. At any of them, you will undergo border and customs control, which is carried out to detect law violators. Be prepared to present documents, answer questions and allow your vehicle to be inspected.

    A foreigner must have:

    – a passport or other document for traveling abroad;

    – a valid visa of the Republic of Belarus (if required) or another document permitting entry and stay;

    – health insurance;

    Border guards may require proof of financial solvency.

    Foreigners entering the Republic of Belarus must have funds equivalent to at least 25 basic units, or 50 basic units if the stay will be for a full 30 days (the basic unit in 2019 is 25.5 Belarusian rubles).

    A vehicle driver must have:

    – a driver's license;

    – registration certificate;

    – documents entitling the vehicle to move (technical passport);

    – documents entitling the movement of goods – when moving goods across the border;

    – an original insurance certificate valid in the Republic of Belarus and confirming civil liability insurance in a member state of the Green Card system. You can also get a Green Card in Belarus immediately upon entry.

    To enter the border zone, foreign citizens must have:

    – a passport or other document for traveling abroad;

    – an individual or group pass issued by the border service authorities. To obtain it, you need to write an application and prepare a document for traveling abroad and a document confirming the purpose of entry (invitation, call for study, and others).

    How to get a pass?

    Previously, foreigners in the border zone had to pay a fee for a special pass. Only those traveling through the border zone to international checkpoints were exempt from it. Now, staying in the border zone has become much easier. Since September 20, 2019, foreigners have been exempted from paying for entry, temporary stay, and movement in the Belarusian border zone.

    To get a pass, contact the territorial body of the border service where the border strip is located. Notify the border guards by phone in advance about your desire to visit the border zone strip for a specific purpose. In addition, you can apply for a pass yourself, using a computer or mobile phone on the Single Portal of Electronic Services.

    The pass is valid for up to 2 years, issued within 5 working days from the date of registration of the application. Its validity period should not exceed the validity period of the passport and the temporary residence permit of the tourist in the country. With a passport and a pass, foreigners can move freely within the borders specified in the pass.

    For violating the order of entry, temporary stay, and movement in the border strip, the pass will be confiscated and a fine of 10 to 50 basic units will be issued.
