The Ministry of Internal Affairs has completed the drafting of a bill on preventing domestic violence. This information is posted on the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus, BELTA reports.
The approximate structure of the future law and specific definitions have been worked out. "The document turned out to be voluminous. It analyzes the current national legislative framework, all of Belarus' international obligations, and foreign practice. By July, we must coordinate the concept with all interested departments, and then submit it to the Council of Ministers for consideration. If everything goes well, according to the plan, the document will be submitted to the President in October. The law could be adopted next year," said Oleg Karazey, deputy head of the Main Directorate for Public Order and Prevention of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He noted that it is necessary to make maximum efforts to convey to every person the importance of combating domestic violence, as well as to continue to improve Belarusian legislation to increase the effectiveness of countering it.
In Minsk, on May 17, the results of the national information campaign to foster intolerance to domestic violence in society "Do Not Be Silent! Stop Domestic Violence!" were summed up, which started on November 28 last year. The representative of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Oleg Karazey, is the national coordinator of this project.
The initiative was organized by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Belarus and the Ministry of Internal Affairs under the project "Strengthening National Capacity in Combating Gender-Based Violence (with a focus on domestic violence) in the Republic of Belarus" with the support of the British government. To discuss the results achieved and to thank everyone involved, during her visit to Belarus, the regional director of UNFPA for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Alanna Armitage, met with representatives of state bodies and public associations that were involved in the information campaign.
The director congratulated everyone on the successful completion of the campaign, which made a significant contribution to countering domestic violence in Belarus. "Silencing this problem is unacceptable, so within the framework of this initiative, we promoted the idea of zero tolerance for gender and domestic aggression. I would like to express special gratitude to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus for their active participation in all stages of the campaign. Also invaluable is the support that the initiative received from other partners: diplomats, media personalities, media outlets, private companies, state institutions, and non-governmental organizations," said Alanna Armitage.
Words of gratitude were also expressed by the UN Resident Coordinator, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme, the Representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Belarus, Ioanna Kazana-Vishnevetsky, Vice-Consul of the British Embassy in Belarus, Lee Stone, and others.
