Belarus expects a significant increase in tourist flow from China after the mutual abolition of visas, Belarusian Prime Minister Andrei Kobyakov said in an interview with the Chinese news agency Xinhua, Belta reports.
"Despite the steps taken in recent years to simplify the mutual visa regime, one of the obstacles to a significant increase in the volume of tourist flows remains the need to obtain visas. In this regard, an agreement on a mutual visa-free regime for holders of ordinary passports is being prepared for signing as part of the Year of Tourism of Belarus in China. Belarus will become one of the first countries in Europe to sign such an agreement with the PRC," Andrei Kobyakov noted.
In his opinion, the mutual abolition of visas will open up new opportunities for cooperation not only in the field of tourism, but also in trade, culture, education and other areas.
In 2017, more than 3.2 thousand organized tourists from China visited Belarus - this is almost twice as many as in 2016. The head of the Belarusian government believes that this figure should be higher. At the same time, Chinese guests for the first time surpassed tourists from Germany and Israel who traditionally visit Belarus (if we compare the number of organized tourists). More travelers come only from countries with which Belarus shares a common border.
Andrei Kobyakov also said that Belarus has already achieved certain successes in developing the China Friendly format: there are establishments where service is provided in Chinese, signs at Minsk National Airport are duplicated in Chinese, and in some places it is possible to pay with a UnionPay card. The possibility of using UnionPay is planned to be expanded.
