Беларусь и Испания обсуждают возможность заключения договоров о правовой помощи

    31.05.2018
Belarus and Spain are discussing the possibility of concluding treaties on legal assistance, BelTA correspondent was informed by Justice Minister Oleg Slizhevsky, commenting on the results of a working visit to Madrid.

At the meeting with the Spanish Justice Minister, further prospects for bilateral cooperation were discussed. In particular, the possibility of concluding international treaties between Belarus and Spain on legal assistance in civil and economic, criminal cases and on extradition in the future was discussed. "If we manage to reach an agreement (and the Spanish side will look into the issue, I think that first of all consultations between experts will be held on this topic), it will be a serious step towards ensuring the protection of the rights and legitimate interests of our citizens who are in Spain and Spanish citizens who are in Belarus," said Oleg Slizhevsky.

In Madrid, the justice ministries of Belarus and Spain signed a memorandum of understanding. In accordance with it, the Belarusian and Spanish departments will be able to exchange experiences, get acquainted with new directions and current trends in the field of justice, including through the organization of working meetings, seminars and internships for experts from both countries. According to Oleg Slizhevsky, this is the first step aimed at establishing closer legal cooperation between the countries.

"It is important to note that this memorandum is the first treaty in recent years between the Ministry of Justice of Belarus and the Ministry of Justice of a state that is a member of the European Union. We also expect that subsequently similar agreements, as well as the conclusion of international treaties on legal assistance, will be the subject of discussion and agreement between Belarus and other member states of the European Union," the minister concluded.
