What is post-COVID-19 syndrome and how to treat the consequences of coronavirus

    27.06.2024
The more severely a person suffered from coronavirus during the COVID-19 pandemic, the more severe the long-term consequences of the disease — post-COVID syndrome — may be. Symptoms that remain after the illness can last for years.

       What is post-COVID syndrome?

Post-COVID syndrome (or long COVID) is a complex of symptoms of the disease that persists long after recovery from COVID. The most common symptoms of long COVID are:

       1) Fatigue and shortness of breath. Even after recovery, many people continue to experience difficulty breathing and fatigue during physical activity.

       2) Pulmonary fibrosis. In some cases, COVID-19 can lead to damage of the lung tissue, causing fibrosis (scarring), which can limit lung function.

       3) Cognitive problems ("brain fog"). This may include difficulties with concentration, memory, and clarity of thought.

       4) Headaches and dizziness. One of the most common symptoms of post-COVID syndrome.

       5) Muscle pain and weakness.

       6) Chronic fatigue.

       7) Smell and taste. Can persist for many months after recovery. Sometimes tastes and smells return, but a person perceives them differently than before (for example, familiar foods acquire the taste and smell of rotten fish). This phenomenon is called parosmia.

       8) Increased risk of thrombosis. COVID-19 can increase blood clotting, which increases the risk of blood clots and, consequently, strokes and heart attacks.

       9) Hair loss.

How to treat the consequences of coronavirus?

The treatment plan should be determined individually depending on what symptoms the person is experiencing. The main thing is to be patient and not rush to buy expensive drugs without visiting doctors and taking the necessary tests.

For example, some symptoms go away on their own, even if recovery takes a very long time. These include parosmia as a consequence of coronavirus: it does not need to be treated, but if it greatly affects your mental health (after all, when the whole world stinks of rotten meat or onions, it significantly reduces the quality of life), you can consult a psychologist, talk to people who have the same problem (there are special chats), try to stimulate your sense of smell with aromatic oils.

Many symptoms are triggered by a lack of vitamins and microelements, as well as abnormal hormone levels. If your hair is falling out heavily, do not rush to consult cosmetologists for injections into the scalp. It is better to get a blood test for vitamin D, iron, zinc, and check your TSH level. Most likely, the problem with hair loss will be solved as soon as you bring these indicators back to normal, although it will take a lot of time (about 6 months: this long period is associated with the hair growth cycle).

It would also be a good idea to do a coagulogram — a test that shows the presence of blood clotting disorders. If clotting is increased, so is the risk of strokes and heart attacks. If necessary, the doctor may prescribe anticoagulants — medications to reduce blood clotting.

It is also important to engage in physical activity. According to the World Health Organization, exercise in the early stages of the disease accelerates the rehabilitation of those sick with coronavirus. The main thing is to maintain balance, not to overexert yourself with physical activity, and to choose the optimal exercises: after all, it is much more difficult to play sports with constant fatigue and muscle pain.
