Many Belarusians find themselves in a situation where obtaining a visa is difficult and expensive, if not impossible, and other holiday destinations like Turkey and Egypt have become tiresome. Therefore, now is the perfect time to turn attention to the home country and travel around Belarus. Our country has an incredible variety of stunningly beautiful and fascinating places that could take a lifetime to explore. Today, we suggest visiting the Sporovsky Nature Reserve, which is about two hours from Brest (by car).
What can you do in the Sporovsky Nature Reserve and its surroundings?
• Bird watching. Birdwatching is ideal for those who are seriously interested in ornithology or simply want to admire unusual birds. The reserve is home to as many as 123 species of nesting birds, 32 of which are listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Belarus. For example, you can spot the black stork and the aquatic warbler (Belarus has the largest population of aquatic warblers in the world!)
• Get to know the flora and fauna of Belarus, including very rare and endangered species: the reserve features the most beautiful species of orchids, lady's slipper, white water lily, and many other plants on the verge of extinction, as well as moose, deer, roe deer, stoats, martens, wolves, foxes, and other animals.
• Take part in the national hand mowing championship of lowland bogs "Sporovsky Mowing" and play football on the bog. In addition, mowing helps prevent the bogs from overgrowing and improves the living conditions for aquatic warblers.
• Take a guided tour along the nature trail of the reserve.
• Visit the eco-ethnographic museum in the agro-town of Sporovo. The museum allows you to get acquainted with the fishing heritage of the Sporovo people and the traditions of preparing fish. You can even try the famous Sporovo carp. Its recipe, by the way, is included in the State List of Intangible Historical and Cultural Values of Belarus.
• Learn to dance the Sporovo Polka, which is also an intangible historical and cultural value of Belarus.
• Visit the Kossovo Palace and Park Complex: the Puslovskys' Palace and the Tadeusz Kosciuszko Museum-Estate.
