Digital security: how to protect yourself from scammers on the internet
21.08.2024
Digital technologies are constantly evolving, but unfortunately, cybercriminals are also evolving, taking advantage of our trust. We'll talk about the basic rules of internet safety and how not to be deceived by scammers online.
How do cybercriminals operate?
1) They try to gain your trust, pretending to be people whom society usually trusts. These can be not only officials, such as bank employees or law enforcement officers, but also your friends, relatives, and even bosses. They can deceive you this way both in a phone conversation and on social networks. Don't hesitate to hang up and block the person in such situations. Even if it's something really urgent, nothing bad will happen if you take a break for a couple of minutes to sort everything out.

What should alert you: calls from bank employees, police, etc., on Viber (they never do this, if the call came on Viber, it's scammers), lack of chat history (when you know for sure that you've chatted with this person before), requests to send large sums of money or follow a link, demands to provide personal data (for example, the code from the SMS that comes with the mandatory note "do not share with anyone").
2) They simulate urgency. "Your account will be blocked now, follow the link and confirm your data," "A loan has been taken out in your name, immediately transfer money to a safe account," and similar — all these are attempts by scammers to scare you and not give you time to think. Try to stay calm and remember: you always have time. Consult with friends or relatives, call the bank yourself (but only using the number listed on the official bank website, never the one that called you!), write to social network support.
3) They send malicious links or files. If you receive an email, message on a messenger, or even an SMS with a link or file from a stranger, and you know for sure that you're not expecting any links or files from anyone, just ignore the message and block the sender.
4) Create clones of official websites. Pay attention: if the site address does not have «https://», do not enter passwords or other personal information under any circumstances. «https://» ensures the encryption of your data, making it inaccessible to посторонних viewing. Even if the site looks «correct» externally, check its address. Scammers can rearrange letters or add new symbols.
How to protect yourself from internet scammers?
• Always use two-factor authentication. Once enabled, in addition to the password to enter the messenger or social network, you will need to enter a special confirmation code that will be sent to your email or via SMS. This way, even if attackers have your login and password, they still will not be able to take over your account unless they also have access to your email or SIM card.
• Change your passwords periodically, especially if you have given account data to another person for any reason. The password should be reliable but not too complicated to remember so that you can easily log into your account at any time. A reliable password includes uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, symbols, and consists of at least 6-8 characters.
• Regularly update your devices and applications. Programmers constantly fix security vulnerabilities in operating systems and applications, so it is important not to neglect their updates.
• Do not share your personal data with anyone. Even if the person requesting it sounds convincing. Scammers skillfully manipulate human fears, so it is important to learn not to succumb to psychological tricks, develop willpower, and be able to say «no».
• Stay calm and vigilant. Approach anything related to large sums of money and personal data with a «cool» head. Remember that if you stop and think about the problem for 5 minutes, the world will not end, and you will not lose anything at all. But if you act on emotions and in a hurry, you may lose a large amount of money.
