Be careful: human trafficking can start with false promises on the internet

    25.02.2026
It's no secret that social relations are increasingly being realized in digital format. The internet environment is becoming a new way for individuals to realize their potential. Criminal organizations also take advantage of the numerous opportunities provided by the internet. For example, human traffickers use the online space to draw victims into their schemes. Most often, the victims of human trafficking are women and girls. They are recruited online for the purpose of further exploitation: sexual or labor.

How does this happen? Recruitment begins with finding out the interests of the victims. Various thematic sites, dating sites, gaming platforms, social networks, and other online applications are used for this purpose. Any chat can be a trap. Criminals subtly maintain the interest of their virtual interlocutor. This creates a feeling of sympathy towards the recruiter in the girl/woman. And the recruiter, by the way, can be a woman who demonstrates emotional closeness and common interests. The trafficker tells how other girls easily earn money, how they spend it on expensive and status clothing, exotic vacations, and restaurant visits. As proof of her words, she shows photographs of girls in the corresponding setting. And so, the future victim of human trafficking is already hooked.
